SFEC Update: November 2022

After a last gasp of warm summer weather, many of us are heading into the woods with thick layers. After a long day of wearing blaze orange outerwear or a cruiser vest, why not come inside and view our webinar "The Good, the Bad, and the Furry" or swing by the Cloquet Forestry Center for a two-day symposium on disturbance? Read on for programs focusing on these and other events into 2023.

November 15: The Good, the Bad, and the Furry: A Modern Tale of Wetland Restoration, Invasive Cattails, and Muskrats(Webinar)

Our November 2022 webinar features Steve Windels with the National Park Service at Voyageurs National Park. Steve will lay out the dangers posed by non-native invasive cattails to Minnesota wetlands and lessons learned from six years of wetland restoration. November 29th and 30th: Natural Disturbance Forest Habitat Summit

As foresters we try to emulate natural disturbance through silvicultural practices, but often nature has other ideas, confounding well-implemented prescriptions. Join us for this two-day exploration of connections between natural disturbance, wildlife habitat, and forest management. Click here to view a brief agenda and register. Lodging at the Cloquet Forestry Center is available for the first 20 applicants.

Other Upcoming Workshops and Events:

January 11, 2023: Forestry and Wildlife Research and Practice Review: Join SFEC for our annual symposium focusing on new applied research relevant to regional natural resource managers, with a focus on silviculture, forest management, and forest-associated wildlife. This focus includes research related to policy, economics, inventory, remote sensing, and other topics pertaining to forests and associated natural resources. Registration will be live soon and a full agenda will be available the first week of December. This event will be held in-person with an online option for those who require it.

Request for Speakers: Interested in speaking at the 2023 Research and Practice Review? We are accepting proposals for 5 or 15 minute presentations in addition to posters. Fill out this form by November 20th to submit your proposal.

Add Your Work to the Great Lakes Silviculture Library!

Communicating our results is key; every prescription is an experiment and can offer insights to foresters. But this work needs to be documented.

We are always looking to expand the Library - found here at this link - so reach out to Lane Moser at moser196@umn.edu if you are interested in sharing your on-the-ground experience and helping fellow forestry professionals. All silviculture is considered, regardless of how complex (or not!) a treatment is.

Survey Request

Drs. Andrew David and Marcella Windmuller-Campione are looking for eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) populations in Minnesota (funded project through LCCMR). We are asking you to share locations of eastern hemlock within the land you own or manage. Trees could be wild or planted, and we can use data on failed plantings too. Location data, combined with soil and climate data, will inform future planting trials. This survey will collect both quantitative and qualitative data, and should take 15-25 minutes to complete.
