SFEC Update: December 2023

What is this now, fourth autumn? The seasons seem to be getting weirder every year. In any case, I hope you're enjoying the relatively mild December weather.

At SFEC we're excited for some upcoming events: This Tuesday, December 12 we've got an online panel on applied silviculture. And to preview a change in next year's webinar policy, there's no charge to attend - this one's free. More on this below.

Enjoy the holidays and early winter! We wish you the best as we turn the calendars over and look forward to seeing you in the woods in 2024.

Upcoming Events:

December 12 Webinar: Panel on Minnesota Silviculture

Attendees at SFEC programs value the opportunity to exchange information about land management practices across agencies and organizations. This panel discussion will be a great chance to do that. Our three presenters represent industry, a nonprofit, and a National Forest. We’ll discuss real-world, practical silviculture issues and ideas, with lots of time for Q&A. Still not registered? Simply join us December 12th at 9am by following this link and viewing the webinar for free!

And speaking of free... Our 2024 webinar series will be completely free.
That's right, get your holiday shopping for the resource manager in your life out of the way by gifting them 12 months of SFEC webinars - and all they have to do is register through Zoom on our 2024 Webinar Series pageChrissy Shaw will kick off the new series going over the Family Forest Carbon Program on January 9th at our usual 9am CST start time; familiar faces from the MN DNR Forest Health team are also on tap along with discussions about oak silviculture, seed collection, Minnesota's forest-dwelling birds, and more. Again, all you have to do is visit our 2024 Webinar page to register at no cost.

Request for Proposals now live: 2024 Forestry and Wildlife Research and Practice Review
We are now accepting proposals for our flagship event, occurring in person on February 21, 2024 at the Cloquet Forestry Center. Expect an audience of regional land managers. We've got a variety of presentation formats including poster-only, 5 minute, and 15 minute presentations. The RPR is a great opportunity to showcase findings from your own practice or new research results.

Researchers aren't the only presenters: Land managers, we definitely want to hear from you too! Click here to fill out the RPR2024 RFP Google Form. If you have questions about possible presentation content, drop us a line anytime.

Other Upcoming Workshops and Events:

Other 2024 offerings
We're planning a number of 2024 offerings, including field workshops on Minnesota's Forest Management Guidelines, the first post-pandemic offering of our Ecosystem Silviculture course, a workshop on silviculture in the Driftless area, various offerings from Minnesota's new Forest Climate Working Group, and much more. Check out the Great Lakes Silviculture Library!
Have you checked out the Great Lakes Silviculture Library recently? On our SFEC website you can see the release detailing the update notes from this past summer, and on our YouTube channel you can check out our tutorials to get oriented.

And as always - we are looking to expand the Silviculture Library, so reach out to Lane Moser at moser196@umn.edu if you are interested in sharing your on-the-ground experience and helping fellow forestry professionals. Help us fill in those gaps! All real-world silviculture is considered, regardless of how complex (or not!) it is.
